Cross Country Finds Its Stride

Cross Country Finds Its Stride

October 13, 2015- The Hartford High cross country team was once fairly large, boasting two full teams;  however, a sharp decline in members saw them fall to only five members last year. This year, the team is again on the rise and back on the map.

With some strong finishes from the boys, and a full squad of girls, the season is off to a solid start.

Senior captain, Matthew Phipps, leads the boys with a win from a meet at Mt. Saint Joseph, and Top 10 finishes in every other meet.

For the girls, Sophomore Grace Furlong, who only started running cross country last year, paces the girls team with multiple Top 5 finishes, including a career-best second at Mt. Saint Joseph; she has also placed in the Top 10 in all races. She says, “I think we have a strong team this year. We are smaller than a lot of other schools, but everyone on the team is committed, and so we are competing hard every practice. I think we do so well in meets because of our hard training.” The team, after losing runners last year, is back in step and is finding its stride.
