Mentor Program

Mentor Program


Purpose:
  1. Heighten new teacher comfort and performance in their role and adjustment to the culture of the school and district.
  2. Ensure that the students receive the highest quality education from new teachers.

Who can be a mentor?
An educator with all of the following:
  • Level II license
  • Plan II educator (as defined by the HSD professional development and evaluation system)
  • Demonstrated performance as an exemplary educator
  • Recommendation by an administrator

The following criteria will be used for the selection of mentors:
Mentors are exemplary practitioners who:
  • Demonstrate a commitment to life long learning
  • Demonstrate a disposition of being in-service to colleagues
  • Utilize excellent communication skills
  • Are respected by colleagues and administrators

Three levels of mentors (Based on experience and training)
  • New Mentors- Mentors that are mentoring for the first time
  • Experienced Mentors- Mentors with one year of experience
  • Accomplished Mentors- Mentors with two or more years of experience

Mentoring requirements:

All Mentors
  • Conduct four coaching cycles
  • Meet weekly with their mentee for a minimum of 30-45 minutes
  • Participate in coaching.
  • Invited (optional) to participate with mentee in:
    • Snack and Chat, September 15, 2010, 3:00 to 4:00
    • Ice Cream Social, May 11, 2011, 3:00 to 4:00
New Mentors
  • Attend two-day training, August 24 & 25, 2010
  • Participate in 4 after-school mentor meetings for 1.5 hours each
    • October 13, 2010, 3:30 to 5:00
    • December 8, 2010, 3:30 to 5:00
    • February 9, 2011, 3:30 to 5:00
    • April 13, 2011, 3:30 to 5:00 (Mentees will also attend)

Experienced Mentors
  • Attend one-day training, August 24, 2010
  • Participate in 4 after-school mentor meetings for 1.5 hours each
    • October 13, 2010, 3:30 to 5:00
    • December 8, 2010, 3:30 to 5:00
    • February 9, 2011, 3:30 to 5:00
    • April 13, 2011, 3:30 to 5:00 (Mentees will also attend)

Accomplished Mentors
  • Attend half day of training (A.M through lunch), August 24, 2010
  • Attend two collaborative inquiry sessions:
    • November 10, 2010, 3:30 to 5:00
    • March 16, 2011, 3:30 to 5:00
  • Participate with mentee in PD & E, PGP training on April 13, 2011, 3:30 to 5:00

Mentees will attend the mentor training during the morning of August 24th (Through lunch)


Mentors are strongly encouraged to:
  • Have frequent informal meetings or check-ins with mentee.
  • Encourage mentee to observe mentor teaching or other experienced teachers in action.

Confidentiality
All communication between the mentor and the mentee should be considered confidential. The exception is if you witness unethical, unsafe, illegal or any behavior that violates school district policies. In that case you are required to notify your mentee and administrator immediately.

How much time is involved in mentoring?
We estimate that mentoring will take 60 hours over the course of the year.  

Compensation:
  • Stipend of $1,200.00
  • New and experienced mentors will receive 2 Re-licensing credits that will count for movement on the salary schedule
  • Can be used as a goal on your professional growth plan

What is a mentor expected to do?
Engage in regularly scheduled, weekly meeting of a minimum of 30 minutes.

Activities may include (but are not limited to):
  • Informal check-in prior to August in-service
  • Help in setting up room, ensuring teacher has needed materials
  • Clarify record-keeping/management procedures
  • Joint unit planning
  • Think aloud about pre-assessment and uses of data
  • Getting ready for open house and/or parent conferences
  • Understanding the grading process/report cards
  • Assist in reflection
  • Coaching in the professional development and evaluation system
  • Assist in understanding the end of year procedures

Selection Process:
The mentoring team will select candidates who, as evidenced by their application and recommendation have demonstrated meeting the criteria. All applicants will be notified if they have been selected. Mentors will be paired with new teachers in consultation with the building administrator.
